Proven History Providing Power Plant Pipe to the Power Generation Industry
Northwest Pipe Company has worked with power producers, design engineers and contracting firms to provide steel water pipe solutions for the power plant industry for nearly a century. Steel pipes operate in penstocks, hydroelectric dams, and various power plant cooling systems across the continent. Welded steel pipe is the ideal product choice for above and below ground applications including recirculating water lines, risers to cooling towers, water supply pipelines, water discharge pipelines and other power plant piping needs.
Recirculating Water Pipe Systems and Other Power Plant Piping
Today, Northwest Pipe continues its long tradition of service to the power generation industry by offering a larger selection of product options than any alternative product. This enables customers to meet the most demanding design criteria economically and efficiently. Steel water pipe has a superior performance history compared to other products, such as concrete pressure pipe materials like PCCP. Due to steel pipe's superior strength and high working pressures, you never have to worry valuable production time will be interrupted by catastrophic failures of your system. Partnering with Northwest Pipe ensures a safe, long-lasting pipeline to supply your water needs.
Steel Water Pipe's Advantages
Because spirally welded steel pipe from Northwest Pipe Company is an engineered system, each application is customized to meet exact project requirements. Engineered systems offer specific advantages over other water pipe materials. Steel pipe requires smaller trenches than other materials because the inherent strength of the material means less wall thickness is needed to accommodate capacity and working pressures. Steel pipe has the best performance of all pipe materials in seismically active zones.
Strong, flexible welded steel pipe is available in lengths up to 60 feet, requiring fewer joints than other materials, which translate into transportation and installation savings. Steel pipe offers both gasketed and restrained joint options for economical installation. Because steel pipe is engineered to specific job site conditions during its manufacture, joints arrive ready for installation. This provides welded steel pipe with a distinct advantage over non-engineered products. Unlike steel pipe, some materials must be pieced together at installation, requiring labor-intensive field cut-to-fit installation techniques.
Custom Power Plant Pipe Design
Partnering with a project's designer, Northwest Pipe can recommend a pressure class design ideally suited for the job's specific application requirements in diameters up to 156 inches. See our Pressure Class Design brochure for more information on designing steel pressure pipe. This brochure also offers a one-page sample specification to get started with specifying steel pipe for your next power project.
Corrosion Protection for Steel Water Pipe
Stray currents and aggressive soil conditions make corrosion protection a vital part of any pipeline solution. Because Northwest Pipe recognizes the value of the owner's investment, the Company can recommend high quality lining and coating options as part of a cathodic protection system to suit a particular project's needs. Cement-mortar and bonded dielectric coatings such as tape and polyurethane are available. Test stations, bonding wires, and impressed current systems can be easily added to monitor and protect the pipeline and provide unlimited life of the system. Northwest Pipe's linings and coating offerings are detailed in our Water Pipe Design Manual's Corrosion Protection section.
Steel Water Pipe Design
The Water Pipe Design Manual includes an extensive collection of technical information on steel pipe. Registration opens the door to information on pipe design, joints, linings & coatings, and an extensive collection of suggested specifications for various lining and coating combinations. Additionally, information of Northwest Pipe's national manufacturing capabilities is included in the manual.
