Project Engineer

Since 1966, Northwest Pipe Company has been a leading manufacturer of welded steel pipe. Through a carefully orchestrated growth strategy, the company has expanded its capabilities to become a national presence in the pipe and tube industry. In our water transmission business segment, the company is the leading supplier of large diameter, high pressure steel pipe products used for water transmission and treatment facilities in the United States and Canada. Our facility in  Fort Worth, Texas has a unique opportunity for a Project Engineer.

This person will be responsible for all stages of job from the initiation of the contract to job close-out. The person supports the Engineering, Plant and Operations Manager and reviews all jobs assigned to the engineering team.  A major part of this position is to provide proactive technical advice between the internal customers and the technical staff to ensure effective manufacturing methods. The person will assist the delivery of all projects in a timely and efficient manner. The Engineer must ensure that the contractual obligations of the organization are met within the parameters of the job budget and minimize the organization’s liability. This person is responsible for serving the needs of the customer and the plant and establishing a long-term rapport with them while keeping the best interests of Northwest Pipe Company in mind. The Engineer must use their strong business analysis including advanced mathematical, application design, and project management skills.
Responsibilities Include:
·         Design, development and delivery of effective water transmission applications;
·         Lead design sessions and review sessions with engineering, operations, production control team members and other members of the organization including all levels of management;
·         Review and assess vendor proposals;
·         Manage multiple, parallel projects using formal project planning techniques;
·         Manage application design through the various lifecycle stages from business needs through design and delivery
·         Review and approve internal take-off and verify that all unusual specifications are included.
·         Initiate necessary Requests for Changes on Information to ensure manufacturing compliance with customer requirements
·         Verify customers’ preferred installation schedule and rates.
·         Confirm all agreements to the customer in writing and distribute to all team members.
·         Ensure that estimating and engineering group have identified all cost saving techniques and materials into designs.
·         Schedule, direct and review individual job design packages.
·         Review customer comments, revisions and re-alignments for conformance with original bidding.
·         Assists the Engineering and Operations Manager in establishing, updating and maintaining departmental and operational procedures.
·         Keeping the organization’s interest in mind at all times.
·         Review and approve revisions, designs and CAD drawings.
·         Keep Production team advised on all changes that have an impact on the contracts. 
·         Establish and maintain strong customer relationships.

 

·         Analyze process, identify problems and propose solutions to the problem.

 

·         Perform cost analysis for new product and processes consideration.

 

·         Use Lean Manufacturing concept to improve the process and profit of the company.

 

·         Peform Facility Layout improvements.(using AutoCAD)

 

·         Convert Manual Drawing to CAD drawing using AutoCAD.

 

·         Perform Advanced Statistics Analysis.

 

 

Education and Experience
·         Mechanical or Civil Engineering or Construction or Industrial Management experience.
·         BS in Civil or Mechanical Engineering Required, MS in Engineering Preferred.
·         Pipe or Steel experience, preferably in Water transmission sector.
·         Project Management role in a complex business and systems environment.
·         Foundry or Steel Mill experience is preferred.
·         Demonstrated ability to project manage multiple, parallel projects.
·         Must have excellent computer skills including MS Word, Excel, CADS and other project management programs.
·         Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
·         Excellent advanced mathematics skills.
·         Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
·         Must have excellent leadership, management, and supervisory and organizational skills required.
·         Must have excellent customer service skills.
·         Must be self-starter, willing to complete assigned tasked with little supervision.
·         Must be willing to accept full project responsibility, from inception to completion.

 

·         Excellent knowledge of AutoCAD software in Designing.

 

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

·         AutoCAD, PRO-E, MS Office, MS Excel, MS Power Point, MS VISIO, Windows98/00, Basics, SAS (Statistical Analysis Software), SQL database, WITNESS Simulation Software.

 

·         Must be familiar with design and engineering software and other computer software including  Lotus Notes.

The person will be required to collaborate with all team members and will be working in a manufacturing and construction environment.
While performing the duties of this job, the team member is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and extreme weather conditions.  Every person at our facility must comply with all safety and manufacturing regulations and the noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

 

The individual will be required to don personal protective equipment while in the plant and on job sites.
