Spotlight on: Mario Rocha

Welder III | Saginaw, Texas

When Mario Rocha first picked up a welding torch at the Saginaw Plant over three decades ago, he discovered a lifelong career and a personal passion for the craft. He’s been a welder at the plant ever since—23 years with Northwest Pipe Company and 12 years with the owners prior, for a total of 35 years. During this impressive tenure, Mario worked his way up to the title of Welder III, the highest level of welder within the Company. Today, Mario enjoys sharing his wealth of knowledge as a mentor to new employees, instilling in them the same sense of pride he gets from working each day producing a quality product.

Cuando Mario Rocha tuvo la oportunidad de soldar por primera vez hace más de tres decadas, descubrió una profesión de por vida, y una pasión incesante hacia esta disciplina. Mario ha sido un soldador para nuestra planta desde aquel entonces – 23 años con Northwest Pipe, y 12 años con los dueños anteriores, un total de 35 años. Durante esta impresionante trayectoria, Mario ascendió a la posición de Soldador III, el nivel más alto de soldador en la compañía. What was your first job at the Saginaw plant?

I started as a janitor; I was hired to sweep the facility. Over time, I picked up welding here, the owners gave me a chance to weld for 30 minutes a day (during my lunch) so I could learn outside of my regular cleaning duties. This is how I started my career.

After working for the Company for so long, what makes you want to stay at NWP?

I’m comfortable here – I wouldn’t want to go anywhere else. I live nearby, I like the stability of my position, and I know everyone that leaves and everyone that comes back. I’ve made a lot of friends here and over the years I’ve established myself as a senior member of the welding team and a mentor for new welders.

Me siento cómodo aquí, y no me gustaría trabajar en ningún otro lugar. Me gusta la estabilidad de mi posición, y conozco a todos los que se han ido y que después regresaron. Tell us more about your role as a mentor?

There are a number of employees that have been here for a long time that I’ve trained. I take an active role in training newcomers and making sure there is no confusion on the welding procedures here, as processes can be different at other companies. For the first month and a half when a new welder joins the team, I mentor them to make sure they learn the ropes and demonstrate their skills well enough to work on their own. I’m one of the voices my supervisor listens to and can trust to gauge the skills of our newer team members.

Being a mentor is one of the things I enjoy most about my job. I love training new employees. Seeing others succeed under my guidance is rewarding. It helps build rapport with my teammates, and I feel well-respected in my role and for my contributions.

Muchos de los empleados que han estado en la compañía por años fueron entrenados por mí. Soy muy activo cuando se trata de entrenar a la gente nueva, y para que no exista confusión con respecto a nuestros procesos y procesos de otras compañías. Durante el primer mes y medio de empleo cuanmdo un nuevo soldador se une al equipo, yo funciono como guía para asegurar de que aprendan y demuestren sus habilidades lo suficientemente bien como para trabajar solos. Soy una de las voces a las que mi supervisor escucha y en la que puede confiar para asesorar las habilidades de nuestros empleados más nuevos.

What does a day in the life of a welder at the Saginaw plant look like?

Each day my focus is the same: quality. When it comes to the employees that I train, I instill in them the idea that quality is the most important part of the day. Improving efficiency and speed are also important, but, at the end of the day, it’s all about the quality of our welds and our finished product. It makes me proud to be a part of Northwest Pipe and a team that values quality the way that I do.

Cada día, mi enfoque cae en lo mismo: calidad. Cuando entreno a empleados nuevos, les estreso la idea de que la calidad es la faceta más importante del día. Mejorar la eficiencia y velocidad de los procesos de producción es importante, pero la calidad de las soldaduras es lo más importante en el producto final. Me enorgullece ser parte de Nowrthwest Pipe y de un equipo que valora la calidad de trabajo al mismo nivel que yo.

What do you find most rewarding or enjoyable about your job?

There’s a specific part of my job that always makes me proud, and it comes back to quality. I do the final weld inspection before the Quality Control (QC) team does their own inspection. When I don’t find anything that needs improving regularly, and QC agrees, it makes me really proud. And it makes the QC’s job a little easier.

La parte específica en mi trabajo que me da orgullo tiene que ver con calidad. Yo me encargo de la inspección final justo antes de la inspeccion del departamento de QC. Cuando mi inspección no encuentra nada de errores, y QC está de acuerdo, me brinda orgullo, ya que significa que le hicimos el trabajo más fácil a QC.

Do you have a favorite project that you’ve worked on during your time with Northwest Pipe?

Some of my favorite projects are internal ones that I’ve worked on to improve safety at our facility. Our management encourages us to write down ideas for process improvements, and being able to bring the ideas to life with my own hands is satisfying. For example, I recently welded together some new safety railings after coming up with the idea myself.

What advice do you have for new welders just getting started?

I’m typically the guy that new welders come to first at the Saginaw plant, and what I tell them is this: if you follow me, you will do well. I essentially treat them like they are my replacement. Anyone that walks through the door can be a good welder and eventually a great one, and even the best. Just lose the nervousness and commit yourself to quality.

Generalmente yo soy la persona que entrena a los nuevos soldadores cuando llegan a nuestra planta, y a todos les digo lo mismo: si sigues mis sugerencias, harás un buen trabajo. Los trato como si fueran mi reemplazo. Cualquier persona que entra por nuestras puertas puede convertirse en un buen soldador, y eventualmente en un gran soldador, puede hasta ser el mejor. Les digo que pierdan los nervios y se comprometan a proveer calidad en su trabajo.

Outside of work, what do you do for fun?

After work I go home and weld! I enjoy working on personal projects, one being building BBQ grills and smokers. My wife and I put them together and sell them. On weekends I like to fire up my own grill and smoke meat at home. Occasionally, we go out for dinner and dancing, but we enjoy the simplicity of being home together.

Cuando estoy en mi casa, me pongo a soldar, y mi pasatiempo favorito es encargarme de proyectos personales: armo parrillas de barbacoa y ahumadores. Mi esposa y yo los ensamblamos, y luego los vendemos. En los fines de semana, me gusta prender mi propia parrilla y ahumar carne en casa. Ocasionalmente salimos a comer o a bailar, pero nos gusta pasar el rato en casa, juntos.
